Step-by-step recipe
Step 1:
Cut the bread into pieces approximately 1 cm thick.
Step 2:
Cut the pieces of bread into 1 cm thick strips.
Step 3:
Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan.
Step 4:
Fry the bread on both sides until crispy.
Step 5:
Place the croutons on a paper towel and allow the excess oil to soak up.
Step 6:
Rub the croutons with garlic cloves.
Step 7:
Salt the croutons.
Step 8:
In a separate small bowl, combine sour cream, dill, garlic and jalapeño and serve the sauce with croutons.
Cooking tips
The croutons don't necessarily have to be sliced so thickly, but if you slice them thinner, the bread might dry out during frying and end up with croutons rather than toast.
Rubbing garlic into croutons is only recommended once the bread has developed a hard crust, which will rub off the garlic like a grater. It's also best to grate the croutons while they're still hot, so the garlic flavor is better released and absorbed.
