Step-by-step recipe
Step 1:
First, cut the cucumber, first into slices, then into sticks. Place the sliced cucumber in a salad bowl.
Step 2:
Let's start slicing the crab sticks. Cut them slightly diagonally. Transfer the crab sticks to the salad bowl.
NOTE: Our recipe uses king crab sticks—they give our dish its distinctive, delicate flavor. But you can use any kind of crab sticks you prefer.
Step 3:
Next, you'll need about two tablespoons of sour cream (or one and a half tablespoons) and one tablespoon of mayonnaise. Mix them together in a separate bowl. Finely grate one clove of garlic and add it to the bowl with the sour cream and mayonnaise.
Step 4:
Finely chop two sprigs of dill. Add them to the crab salad dressing.
NOTE: Dill is the perfect pairing for corn-free crab sticks. If you're feeling experimental, try adding some green onions or black pepper. These ingredients also pair well!
Step 5:
Add a little salt to the dressing, mix and add to the salad.
Step 6:
The last ingredient is croutons. Add them to the salad.
NOTE: Any store-bought white bread croutons in a package with your preferred flavoring will work.
Step 7:
Mix again and our salad is ready. Enjoy!
Cooking tips
The popular crab sticks that form the basis of this quick salad were created as an imitation of expensive crab meat from ground white ocean fish known as surimi. Since then, they have become an essential ingredient in numerous salads around the world. Paired with fresh cucumber, our corn-free crab salad becomes a delicious and light dish for everyday and festive occasions.
To make crab salad without corn especially delicious, follow our recommendations.
Quality of crab sticks. For a corn-free crab salad, choose Premium or Royal surimi sticks. The higher the fish content, the more tender and juicy your dish will be.
Handling the sticks. If you're using frozen crab sticks, defrost them slowly in the refrigerator. If you need to defrost them quickly, place them in a bowl of cold water for 5-10 minutes. This will preserve their texture and flavor. Never use hot water or a microwave.
Cucumbers add freshness to crab salad. Use only fresh, crisp cucumbers. Avoid cucumbers with thick or bitter skins. Juiciness is the key to this corn-free crab salad. Wash the cucumbers under cold running water and then pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
The secret to croutons: To prevent croutons from getting soggy, add them to the salad just before serving. They should remain crispy. If you're preparing the salad in advance, store the croutons separately.
Infusing the dressing. The sour cream, mayonnaise, and garlic mixture can be prepared in advance. This will allow the garlic to release its flavor, making the corn-free salad dressing more flavorful.
