Cooking tips
Enhance the flavor: For a richer flavor, add a little grated apple or a squeeze of lemon juice. Don't skimp on the mayonnaise—it should completely bind all the ingredients.
Be sure to use only cooked vegetables—raw ones will be too crunchy and ruin the texture. Also, don't overdo the onion, as it won't be too spicy.
Don't skip the onion soaking step. Even the "lazy" version, pickling onions (in vinegar, water, or milk) will make the salad softer and more flavorful.
Substitute ingredients: If you don't have herring, you can use canned tuna or crab sticks. Sour cream or yogurt will work in place of mayonnaise.
Serve the salad in a beautiful bowl, garnished with fresh herbs. Pairs perfectly with black bread. This salad makes a great addition to any menu.
Make it easier: All vegetables can be pre-cooked and stored in the refrigerator, allowing you to assemble the dish in just 5 minutes before serving.
Use pre-cooked herring fillets. This will save time on filleting the fish and eliminate the risk of small bones ending up in your salad.
