Prepare the onion. Peel and finely dice the onion. Pour boiling water over it to reduce the pungent odor.
Step 3:
Add the onion. Place the chopped onion on top of the herring layer. Spread mayonnaise over everything.
Step 4:
Prepare the apple. Peel and grate the green apple. Place it on top of the onion layer.
Step 5:
Add the eggs. Boil the eggs, peel them, and grate them. Place them on top of the apple layer.
Step 6:
Cover the egg layer with mayonnaise.
Step 7:
Prepare the carrots. Peel and grate the carrots. Place them on top of the egg layer.
Step 8:
Add the beets. Peel and grate the beets. Place them on top of the carrots and press lightly.
NOTE: Grate and place the beets wearing disposable gloves or in a plastic bag placed over your hand.
Step 9:
Cover the top layer with mayonnaise.
Step 10:
Chill. Place the finished salad in the refrigerator for 8 hours to allow it to infuse and soak.
Cooking tips
Let the salad sit in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. You can leave it overnight.
Use a good quality mayonnaise and add some fresh herbs, such as dill or green onions, for a brighter flavor.
Any other fish can be used instead of lightly salted herring.
Serve the salad in a pretty bowl or simply in a salad bowl, garnished with fresh herbs. This dish is perfect for any celebration.
Make it easy: All the vegetables and eggs can be prepared in advance. For quick serving, use tartlets or bowls so each guest gets a serving of salad.
