Step-by-step recipe
Step 1:
Peel the canned tomatoes and puree them in a blender.
Step 2:
Cut the meat for shashlik.
Step 3:
Add tomato juice and tomato brine, salt, pepper to the pureed tomatoes in a bowl and mix well.
Step 4:
Place the meat in a bowl and mix.
Step 5:
Cut the red onion into rings, add to the meat and stir.
Step 6:
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave to marinate for an hour and a half.

It's best to use natural tomato juice. Check the saltiness of store-bought juice to determine how much salt to add to the marinade.
Don't thread onions onto skewers—they'll burn on the grill. Instead, marinate a small amount of fresh onion separately in vinegar and serve with the shashlik.
