Cooking tips
To ensure the candies hold their shape, let the mixture cool slightly (until lukewarm) before shaping. If you don't want to or don't have time to make balls, you can shape the candies in an ice cube tray. You can also refrigerate the candy mixture in a flat container and then cut it into cubes or any other desired shape. Instead of powdered milk, you can use powdered infant formula, and instead of sugar, use a powdered sweetener (stevia or fitparade). Almond flour instead of nuts makes truffle candies. A popular Soviet-era recipe involves mixing powdered milk with powdered sugar or powdered baby food (Malutka) half and half with ice cream, rolling them into balls, rolling them in cocoa powder, and freezing them. Dried fruits, such as prunes, cherries, and dried apricots, can be added to the candies.
