Baked pears with honey and cinnamon
Origin of the recipe
The recipe dates back to medieval European cuisine, where pears were often prepared with honey and spices as a symbol of sophistication and prosperity. In the monastic and palace kitchens of France, Italy, and Germany, pears were baked whole or in slices, adding cinnamon—one of the first Eastern spices to become available in Europe via trade routes. Nuts (usually walnuts or almonds) were added later to add texture and nutrition. This dish was served as a light dessert after a hearty meal or as a treat on holidays. Today, baked pear with honey and cinnamon remains a popular choice in healthy and seasonal cuisine, reflecting the harmony of simplicity and refined flavor.

Step-by-step recipe:
Step 1:
Prepare the pears: wash them thoroughly and dry them. Cut each pear in half and carefully remove the core and seeds. If the core doesn't come off easily, you can cut the pear into quarters and remove the core.
Step 2:
Chop the nuts: Chop the walnuts into small pieces with a knife.
Step 3:
Arrange the pears: Place the pear halves, cut side up, in a baking dish, close together.
Step 4:
Drizzle with honey: Using a spoon, drizzle honey evenly over each pear half, making sure to coat each half.
Step 5:
Sprinkle with cinnamon: Sprinkle the pears with ground cinnamon.
Step 6:
Add nuts: Sprinkle the pears with chopped walnuts.
Step 7:
Add butter: Place one knob of butter on each pear half.
Step 8:
Bake: Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Place the baking dish with the pears in the oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes, until the pears are soft and golden brown.
Step 9:
To serve: Remove pan from oven, let cool slightly and serve warm or at room temperature.
Cooking tips:
The riper the pear, the softer and sweeter it will be after baking. Avoid pears that are too green or hard.
Honey — to taste: Adjust the amount of honey as needed. If you prefer a less sweet dessert, use less honey or add it after baking.
Nuts - optional: If you don't eat nuts, substitute pumpkin or sunflower seeds, or simply leave them out. The dish will be just as delicious.
Baking time: How long to bake the pears depends on their size and ripeness. Start checking for doneness after 20 minutes. The pears should be soft but not falling apart.
Use a rimmed baking dish: This will help collect any juices that escape during baking and prevent staining your oven.
Cinnamon - to taste: If you like a richer flavor, increase the amount of cinnamon to 1 teaspoon.
