Potato casserole with minced meat
Origin of the recipe
A mashed potato casserole with minced meat is a classic of home cooking. It's believed that its first version, made with ground lamb, was known in England as "Shepherd's Pie." The dish gained widespread popularity in the late 19th century, when the invention of the meat grinder made mincing meat simple and convenient.

Cooking tips
For mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes are better – they contain more starch, which gives the potatoes a crisp texture and the mashed potatoes an airy texture.
It's best to mash potatoes with a potato masher (electric or regular). Avoid using a blender, as the mashed potatoes will be too dense and heavy.
Always add warm or hot milk to the puree. If you add cold milk, the puree will cool down and take on an unpleasant grayish tint.
The casserole can be made vegetarian by using soybean mince soaked in boiling water or finely chopped mushrooms instead of ground meat. Grated cheese, which can be sprinkled over the ground meat layer during assembly or on top of the casserole 10 minutes before it's ready, adds a beautiful touch and a piquant flavor.
Some housewives add herbs not to minced meat, but to mashed potatoes.
If you don't have milk or aren't using it, you can add 2 tablespoons of sour cream to the mashed potatoes. To make the potato layer fluffier, separate the egg white and beat it thoroughly with a pinch of salt before adding it to the mashed potatoes.
Potato casserole with minced meat is served with sour cream, tomato sauce or melted butter.
