Potato balls with beef in dough

These baked potato balls with meat filling are often prepared in Arab countries during the Muslim fast of Ramadan. During this holy month, the first meal of the day is eaten after sunset. After a day of fasting, hearty dishes are especially satisfying.

Step-by-step recipe
Step 1:
Pour 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil into the frying pan.
Step 2:
Add crushed garlic, finely chopped onion and fry for 2-3 minutes.
Step 3:
Add ground beef and stir-fry until the ground beef changes color.
Step 4:
Cover and cook for 8-10 minutes.
Step 5:
Add the pureed tomatoes, a teaspoon of salt, a teaspoon each of ground chili and cumin, half a teaspoon of black pepper, a teaspoon each of paprika and oregano. Stir well and turn off the heat.
Step 6:
Boil the potatoes, grate them and place them in a bowl.
Step 7:
Grate the mozzarella and add to the potatoes.
Step 8:
Add a teaspoon of salt, half a teaspoon of oregano, two tablespoons of milk and mix thoroughly.
Step 9:
Line a small bowl with cling film.
Step 10:
Place the mashed potatoes in a bowl and press them into the shape of the bowl, creating a well.
Step 11:
Place a portion of the prepared minced meat into the cavity.
Step 12:
Cover the potato ball with cling film.
Step 13:
Form balls with the filling from the remaining ingredients and place in a baking dish.
Step 14:
In a clean frying pan, melt a tablespoon of butter, add a tablespoon of flour, mix well and fry for 1 minute.
Step 15:
Add a glass of milk and stir with a whisk.
Step 16:
Add a quarter teaspoon each of salt, pepper, and oregano. Whisk to combine.
Step 17:
Pour the batter over the potato balls.
Step 18:
Sprinkle the balls and dough with grated mozzarella, oregano and chili flakes.
Step 19:
Bake in a preheated oven for 10-15 minutes at 180 degrees.
Step 20:
Sprinkle with cilantro and serve.
Cooking tips
You can use chicken instead of ground beef.
Cook the dough in a frying pan that is not too hot to prevent it from burning.
