This classic English Easter pastry is famous worldwide. It's very simple, yet looks very impressive. These buns are perfect for both afternoon tea and evening tea. Serve them hot off the stove, sliced lengthwise and generously buttered. That's why they're called Hot Cross Buns.

Step-by-step recipe
Step 1:
Place flour, sugar, dry yeast, cinnamon, spice mix, and salt in a food processor. Mix well.
Step 2:
Add milk, melted butter, egg, orange zest, and large raisins. Stir.
Step 3:
Turn the dough out onto a surface and lightly knead it with your hands, then place it back into the food processor bowl and knead for 5 minutes until the dough is soft and smooth.
Step 4:
Cover the dough with film and leave to rise for an hour and a half.
Step 5:
Place the dough on a floured surface, roll into a sausage shape and divide into 12 pieces.
Step 6:
Roll portions of the dough into balls, place on a baking sheet lined with paper, cover with film and leave for 40 minutes.
Step 7:
Mix flour with water, place in a pastry bag and draw crosses on the blanks.
Step 8:
Bake for 20 minutes.
Step 9:
Spread the buns with apricot jam diluted with water and serve.
Cooking tips
If you don't have a food processor, knead the dough by hand – this will take 10 minutes.
To roll the dough into balls, pinch one end and then roll. Place the buns on the baking sheet with the smooth side down.
Determine if the buns are ready by their golden brown color.
The buns are best eaten hot, cut lengthwise and greased with butter.
